Step 4: Mozilla Firefox Browser - Tips on using Mozilla Firefox Browser.

The Mozilla Firefox browser is a web browser that is much more safe to use rather then Internet Explorer.  It is easy to install and customize to your needs.  Most spyware created is geared towards Internet Explorer.  Since IE is the most popular web browser, creators of spyware can cripple more of an audience and look for holes in IE.  Some of the advantages of the Mozilla Firefox browser are:

  - Faster Browsing

  - Tabbed Browsing

  - Improved Pop-up Blocking

  - Stronger Security

  - Customize Firefox

We believe everyone should install Firefox and give it a chance.  Once and a while a website will not work on the Mozilla Firefox browser so you’ll have to cut and paste the address into Internet Explorer but more and more websites are designing them with Firefox in mind and you rarely see that these days.  We’ll show you how to Install Firefox, Simple Adjustments to Mozilla Firefox Browser, and How to Customize Firefox.

    1. Select Tool -> and scroll to Options.

    2. Now a window will pop up and click on Main.

    3. Put in an address for your homepage, I use www.google.com.

    4. Now below this click the, Check Now box.  It will ask if you want Firefox to be your default browser.  Select Yes.

    5. Ok

Hit the House button and it will take you to your homepage  (A little message will appear at the top of the main area.  Click Don’t Show this Again and go over to the X and close that little box.  Now if you hit your homepage house again this will not show up).

Setting Up Downloads

We’ll set up how the Mozilla Firefox Browser will handle your downloads.

1.Stay in the Main window and look for the Downloads section.  Here are your two options for saving files:

Option 1 (Automatically save files to a folder):  Click Browse -> My Documents -> Ok

Option 2 (Firefox will ask you every time you download a file):  For this check:  Always ask me where to save files. -> Ok

If you selected the first option it will automatically save file to you’re My Documents folder.  You can point it to any folder we just picked this one because all Windows computers have this folder.

How to Customize Firefox

The Mozilla Firefox browser is a great tool to help your fight against spyware.  We hope to these tips make your transition from IE easier.  Two great ways to customize Firefox is using tabbed browsing and setting up your bookmarks.  We’ll look at both.

  - First import all your bookmarks from IE.  Do this step.

We’ll want to customize Firefox to look like this:   picture

Firefox Bookmarks

Lets set up our bookmarks.  A bookmark is simply a marker for your saved web pages.  I have a few simple tweaks to make your bookmarks easier to get to.

Lets delete some unwanted bookmarks that get added when we install Firefox:

  - Open up Firefox.

  - Select Bookmarks at the top -> Organize Bookmarks

  - In the main window expand, Bookmarks Toolbar Folder.  You can delete anything under this folder.  Just select it and hit the X.

  - Now look for and delete the folder named Mozilla Firefox

Adding the bookmark shortcut to your toolbar is a great little tweak.  To do this:

  - Select View at the top

  - Highlight Toolbars and select Customize

  - Grab the Bookmarks icon and drag it under the green arrow icon

  - While you are there lets grab New Tab icon and the Printer icon and drag it over there.

Tabbed Browsing

Tabbed browsing is a great feature of the Mozilla Firefox browser.  Tabbed browsing lets you open up a few windows at once and you can switch between windows by clicking the desired tab.  It really is great and keeps all of the windows that are open in one browser page instead of a bunch of open windows on your taskbar.  Tabbed browsing is included in the new IE7 but we still like to use the Mozilla Firefox browser.

There isn’t much to using tabbed browsing.  Follow these steps, Add Icon, to add the tabbed browsing icon to you toolbar.  To use tabbed browsing:

  - Either click this icon or select File -> New Tab

A blank tab will open and you can then type in the web address you desire.  This is the beauty of tabbed browsing.  Who want their task bar to look like this:   picture
